Derby Day

The 2020 Lac du Bonnet Ice Fishing Derby is almost here! Over the past little while, we’ve noticed a lot of new people are being introduced to the Derby for the first time. So we’ve put together a quick rundown of derby day. The timeline is as follows:

  • 7:00 am Registration opens
  • 8:30 am Anglers can go onto the ice and select their holes
  • 10:30 am Derby begins
  • 1:30 pm End of Derby. Anglers can go to the Lac du Bonnet Community Centre or to the Lac du Bonnet Legion for the prize giveaways.

The Lac du Bonnet Ice Fishing Derby is at the Town Dock in Lac du Bonnet. When you’re coming into Lac du Bonnet from Hwy 317, you can park at the Community Centre or park on one of the side streets close to the Derby site.

Registration is at the Lakeview Inn across the street from the Derby site.

Official Multi-Piece Tickets

You do not need to come to registration if you have purchased your tickets at a retail location prior to the Derby and you have your official multi-piece ticket. Make sure you attach the large section to your jacket and that it’s visible.

Online purchasers need to come to registration to get your official multi-piece tickets. We have an Online Orders desk. Please have the Purchasers name (the one who placed the order) and at least one of the emails that were sent to you when the order was placed (e-ticket, order confirmation or PayPal receipt). If you would like to buy a second hole, you can purchase it when you pick up your tickets at the registration (or order online prior to the derby).

You can purchase your tickets at the registration on the day of the Derby (we accept cash, debit, Visa & Mastercard at the registration only) or at the Co-op Gas Bar in Lac du Bonnet (cash only).

Once you have your multi-piece ticket you’re all set and registered for prizes. You’re allowed on the ice at 8:30 am to choose your hole(s). You can select your hole and leave your bucket with the bucket tag (small bottom piece of the ticket) at the hole if you want to go for breakfast and return for the start of the Derby at 10:30 am.

Ahh, the fun part! We get up early and drill all the holes for our amazing anglers. Fishing starts at 10:30 am. There will be announcements and a shotgun start. Well, airhorn start. Our MC Dave Ogren will play some games and play some music, you know, MC stuff.

When you catch a fish, put the fish in your bucket (add water to your bucket when you get to your hole) and start yelling for the fish measurers. They come to you and record the time and length. You then need to release the fish back into the river. This year we’ve divided the grid onto smaller sections and added more measurers.

Danny’s Whole Hog will be serving their delicious BBQ at the Derby site this year. In fact, they’ll be going around to serve people at their holes. No reason to go hungry.

After the Derby

You’re invited to the prize giveaways after the Derby. As usual, the prize announcements are at the Lac du Bonnet Community Centre. New this year, we’ve added the Lac du Bonnet Legion as a family-friendly area. We’ll Facebook Live the giveaways and show it on a big screen at the Legion. The Legion is right next door to the Community Centre and Arena.

Please note that each of these locations has capacity limits and once those limits are reached we do have to turn people away. On the plus side, you do not need to be present at the prize giveaways to win. Winners who are not present will be contacted and we’ll make arrangements to get you your prize(s).
